THE MTV STAYING ALIVE FOUNDATION PRESENTS MTV RE:DEFINE 2018 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GOSS-MICHAEL FOUNDATION AND DALLAS CONTEMPORARY HONORING TRACEY EMIN CBE RA
The MTV Staying Alive Foundation, in partnership with Dallas Contemporary and The Goss-Michael Foundation, is pleased to announce this year’s MTV RE:DEFINE benefit will feature contemporary art donations by celebrated British icons Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn and others, which will be auctioned at the world-premiere art exhibition gala. The evening, presented by NorthPark Center, takes place on Friday, April 13, 2018 in their multi-million dollar art installation space: the CenterPark Garden.
Tracey Emin is this year’s artist honoree at MTV RE:DEFINE benefit. Often considered one of the most significant British contemporary artists, Emin is best known for her autobiographical and confessional works that span a variety of media including painting, drawing, video, photography, sculpture, neon text and sewn appliqué. Emin’s work has been exhibited extensively internationally, including solo and group exhibitions in America, Japan, Australia, Germany and Holland. Most recently, she unveiled a new permanent public commission in Sydney, “The Distance of Your Heart” (2018).
Emin will be donating to the live auction: Its different when you are in love (2016) – a neon text art installation (127 x 39 x 1 inches) – and three gouaches: Dreaming That you were There (2011) 23.23 x 30.71 inches, I wanted to be carried by you (2011) 10 x 13.98 inches, and Thank you (2011) 10 x 13.98 inches.
Singer-songwriter Arlissa is also confirmed to perform at this special benefit. The German-born and London-bred artist is best known for her global viral hit ‘Hearts Ain’t Gonna Lie’ with Jonas Blue, which was touted by Idolator as “the first big banger of 2018”. The single has to date racked up over 9.8 million streams on Spotify. Arlissa’s effervescent soulful vocals saw her earmarked in the highly influential BBC Sound of 2013 alongside HAIM, The Weeknd and CHVRCHES early in her career, and opened the door for a collaboration with Nas. A rising star in her own right, Arlissa has also co-written for K-pop giants BTS and even had Nelly Furtado cover her single ‘Sticks and Stones’.
The evening will also feature a live auction led by Simon de Pury, and chaired by Maxine Trowbridge and Brooke Davenport to benefit the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and Dallas Contemporary.
Since 2011, MTV RE:DEFINE has been recognized as a premiere exhibition and auction in Dallas, TX, raising over $10 million for HIV prevention through MTV Staying Alive, and the Dallas arts community through Dallas Contemporary. This has been made possible thanks to contributions from many of the world’s leading artists including Marc Quinn, Michael Craig Martin, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Nate Lowman, Sterling Ruby, Damien Hirst, Sarah Morris, Theaster Gates and Kenny Scharf among others.
This year’s event marks the 20th anniversary of MTV Staying Alive Foundation and the 40th anniversary of Dallas Contemporary. The exhibition will feature over 50 works, including pieces from some of the world’s foremost contemporary artists: Tracey Emin, Richard Phillips, and Francesco Clemente, amongst others. Selected works will be on view to the public at NorthPark Center the week before the benefit. Peter Doroshenko, Executive Director of Dallas Contemporary, remarked: “MTV RE:DEFINE is always the best extravaganza for great food, the best contemporary art, and iconic rock n’ roll – it’s a Dallas event like no other. Tracey Emin will push the limits of cool Britannia and the event’s electric vibe.”
“The Dallas community has been such a huge supporter of MTV RE:DEFINE over the years, and we’re thrilled to bring MTV RE:DEFINE back to Dallas again as part of MTV Staying Alive’s 20th anniversary celebrations,” said Georgia Arnold, Executive Director, MTV Staying Alive Foundation.
“For the past four years, NorthPark Center has been honored to support the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Dallas Contemporary and The Goss-Michael Foundation through MTV RE:DEFINE.
We are thrilled to extend our involvement this year by hosting this premier art auction at NorthPark Center in our CenterPark Garden. It is certain to be an incredible evening, featuring the fabulous work of Tracey Emin and raising much-needed funds for HIV prevention and arts education,” said Nancy A. Nasher, Co-owner of NorthPark Center with her husband David Haemisseger.
