Biography

UK Soul songstress Joss Stone is an artist of the truest type. Having released three studio albums and establishing herself as one of the music most brilliant vocalist this 22-year-old girl from Devon has sold over 8 million albums worldwide.

November 2nd 2009 sees the release of Joss’s fourth studio album Colour Me Free.
This next chapter from Miss Stone reveals new dimensions of the singer while never losing the soul roots and grace of past albums, Soul Sessions (2003), Mind Body and Soul (2004) and Introducing Joss Stone (2007), which together went on to make Joss an international soul superstar of style and substance.

In the writing and recording of Colour Me Free, which took place at Mama Stones, Joss’s mums live music venue, in Wellington, England, Joss who produced the album along side Jonathan Shorten and Conor Reeves, created 12 finely crafted yet raw tracks that owe as much to Joss’s past as to her future. Of the album Joss says: “This time, the album was not dictated or forced, it was an organic process where each musician was given the freedom to create their sound. I co-produced this record; it’s an honest and accurate representation of where I am as an artist and person right now. I am really proud of the music and excited to have people finally hear the songs.”

The album is an eclectic mix of pop, soul, r ‘n’ b, funk, hip-hop and gospel sounds. The lead single Free Me is a pop song with an infectiously catchy chorus while Incredible posses a raw funk sound. Could have been You captures urban influences and You Got The Love carries strong Gospel undertones.

Joss called in some friends to help with some of the songs on the album. Jeff Beck and Sheila E feature on Parallel Lines, Raphael Saadiq performs on Big Ole Game, Governmentalist features Nas, I Believe It To My Soul features Dave Sanborn and Jamie Hartman co-wrote and appears on Stalemate.

From the time Stone emerged on the music scene aged 16, she has always displayed a strength and intensity, despite insisting that back then, being so young, she didn’t know what she was doing, critics disagreed, calling her a singer who possesses a “rich, deep, soulful belt,” - New York Post, and “unlike any singer of her generation.” In the UK agreed with The Observer noting that” Stone’s is a startling gift, a voice both old school and fresh”, her albums “full of honeyed swing and righteous smoulder.”

After releasing the 2003 debut The Soul Sessions, an album of covers of obscure soul tracks, Stone hit the road for a year, then recorded 2004’s Mind, Body & Soul, her first album of original material.
