Frank Lampard OBE to Receive 2018 Legends of Football Honour

One of the most prestigious charity events in football is to induct England, Chelsea, West Ham United, Manchester City and New York City legend Frank Lampard into its roll call of all-time greats.

Sponsored by hmv, and with the Premier League as a long-standing supporter of the event, Legends of Football has raised over £7 million for music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins since its first event in 1997.  The charity is dedicated to changing the lives of vulnerable and isolated people.

Every year, one of the giants of the game is selected to receive an official stamp of greatness from the football world, joining the likes of John Charles, Sir Stanley Matthews, Brian Clough, Sir Bobby Robson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish, Alan Shearer, Eric Cantona and last year’s recipient Steven Gerrard.

This year, Frank Lampard is added to the roll of honour as one of football’s modern legends.   Starting his career at West Ham United, he went on to become a Chelsea icon for 13 years before a celebrated spell at Manchester City saw him on his way to finish his career in the US, with New York City in the MLS.

Along the way, he played 858 games, scoring 177 goals.  He won 106 caps for England, netting 29 goals and garnered a reputation as the finest goal scoring midfielder of his generation.

He won the UEFA Champions League, three Premier League Titles and four FA Cups.  Frank was a key part of Chelsea’s 2009 double winning team and scored the winner in the FA Cup final.  He was captain for their 2012 UEFA Champions League win and played in six major international tournaments for England.

“It’s a real honour for me to receive the Legends Of Football award this year,”  says Frank Lampard, “Just seeing my name mentioned amongst those past winners is something to cherish.  I’m looking forward to the dinner on October 8th. I hope to see you there.”

Geoff Shreeves, Chairman of Legends Of Football says: “Legends Of Football has become a coveted badge of honour for the greatest footballers over the last 21 years and Frank Lampard fully deserves this honour. His outstanding career saw him win every possible domestic trophy as well as breaking numerous individual records.  We can’t wait to celebrate an extraordinary career.”

Legends of Football will celebrate Frank Lampard at their star studded event on 8th October 2018 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

Julie Whelan, CEO of Nordoff Robbins says: “Events like the Legends of Football are vital to us as a charity. Nordoff Robbins receive no government funding and we rely on the generosity of our supporters to keep our services going. We thank everyone involved in this event for their hard work and dedication and a big thank you to all who attend – every penny raised goes directly towards our music therapy delivery, helping us to change more lives through music.”

Premier League Executive Chairman, Richard Scudamore says, “Legends of Football is a fantastic event that combines the power and popularity of the Premier League and the music world to support the crucial work of Nordoff Robbins. This year we look forward to celebrating the career of Frank Lampard, who had a remarkable playing career and is a Premier League icon. His professionalism on and off the pitch makes him a great role model for young people and his support for this year’s Legends of Football promises to make it a very special event.”

Paul McGowan, Chairman of Hilco Capital, parent company of hmv says: “We are so proud to continue our support for this amazing event. It brings together the football and entertainment worlds to celebrate some of the greatest players and managers of all time, while raising funds for the incredible Nordoff Robbins charity. As a Chelsea fan, I am delighted that this year we will be honouring Frank Lampard, a worthy recipient of a unique award.”
