In all, a total of 18 awards were handed out – celebrating the very best new music of the last year and beyond.

It is Q’s job to reflect this passion, variety and scope for new music – and we will be doing so bigger and better than ever before in the months ahead.”

TWO GREAT ROCK ANNIVERSARIES FOR THE PRICE OF ONE: Q MAGAZINE is 25, U2’s ACHTUNG BABY is 20

Q – the UK’s biggest selling monthly music magazine – is proud to announce a very special issue featuring an exclusive CD: AHK-TOONG BAY-BI COVERED – an interpretation of U2’s landmark album featuring a host of stellar artists.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Q presents the album as a commemoration of U2’s Achtung Baby, 20 this year. All of the tracks on the CD are brand new recordings made exclusively for Q.
Q Editor in Chief Paul Rees commented: “It is always Q’s intention to present a unique take on music. At a time when free CDs have become ten-a-penny, I strongly believe the Achtung Baby Covered album sets a new, and much higher, benchmark for the format. Not only in the sense that each of the tracks are brand new recordings by some of the biggest and most iconic names in music such as Jack White, Nine Inch Nails and Patti Smith, but also in that several of them mark the first new material we have heard from these acts in a long time –
such as those by The Killers, Damien Rice and Garbage. This is an entirely appropriate way to mark Q’s anniversary and that of Achtung Baby, one of the pivotal albums in our lifetime.”
The magazine/cd package is a strictly limited edition and will only be available from www.qthemusic.com and in stores from the 25th October.

Highlights from the 25th anniversary issue include……
Noel Gallagher
On what he missed whilst he was away in the US recording his debut solo album;
I feel like I’m watching a disaster movie when the news from home comes on the TV. Amy Winehouse dies – what a fucking waste of life and talent eh? The Euro seems to be dying. Every person you can think of’s phone has been hacked into. The Police are in on it. I mean what the fuck’s going on, man? We need Batman to come down and sort it all out we really do.
The Phone hacking scandal pissed me off actually. There was a part of me thinking ‘Andy Gray is having his phone hacked and not me?’ That’s the final insult.
News International would have called fucking exorcist if they’d picked up his 3am messages.
What was the last song that reduced you to tears?
I have never cried over music. Never. I’m not that kind of person. I can appreciate someone putting their heart out into music but I still end up analysing the chords and thinking ‘You should have gone to A minor there, mate’. Birds cry over music. I put the kettle on.
On Lady Gaga
I don’t give a fucking monkey’s about Lady Gaga. It’s all about the meat suit and the controversy isn’t it? It’s Madonna lite. Madonna was hardcore. She took it to the edge musically as well as everything else. Twenty years from now, will we be listening to Lady Gaga? No.
On which legend he’d most like to see live
I’d kill to see Bowie live. I know he hasn’t been very well but we need him. He’s just in a different league to everyone else.
Elbow
On a classic act or album from the past 25 years that leaves them cold.
Guy Garvey: Nirvana, I don’t fucking get it. Kurt Cobain was angry and frustrated. And then he died. That’s terrible but i’m not sure about the music.
Pete Turner: But they created a new sound….
Guy Garvey: I’m not sure they did The Smashing Pumpkins Gish was out already (in May 1991) they drew a lot from that.
Jessie J
On the first record she ever bought
Brimful Of Asha Cornershop I loved it. Probably because it had the word ‘bosom’ in it.
On if she ever dressed as a pop star aged 12
At school, I always wanted to be Posh Spice. But because I was tomboy I had to be Sporty Spice. So I dressed up as Sporty but I was Posh. I’d probably be Scary now.
On what acknowledged classic record does nothing for her
I was never an Abba fan. Cheesy. Abba for me is just awful wedding (sings clicks fingers) Copa! Copacabana Doo-roo-roo! (It is then pointed out that this is Barry Manilow) “Oh yeah. He can jog on as well”.
Coldplay
On the music that makes him cry
Chris Martin: Well, the last one would be (Any Winehouse’s) Back To Black because she died, but that record moves me anyway. I’m 35. I don’t cry any more. I just tense my muscles and grit my teeth. I’m getting progressively more English, managing to learn how to suppress all my feelings. Except on record.
On the best album of the past 25 years
Chris Martin: Nirvana’s Nevermind. Every single person who’s been playing guitar fir more than two minutes can play Nevermind but no one on earth can writ it. It boggles my brain.
Liam Gallagher
On the classic record that does nothing for him
I’ve never even heard OK Computer but anything by Radiohead doesn’t make much sense to me. Karma Police is alright but it’s The Beatles innit.
On who is the one person is he’s met with the worst taste in music
Noel Gallagher. He’s just into a lot of shit. He’s into himself. He’s a big fan of Morrissey and I like Morrissey as a person but I don’t know about that.
Damon Albarn
On his writing an English Opera (Dr Dee)
I’ve done one English musical (Blur’s) The Great Escape. I’ve always thought that could be a great musical. We wrote that record as we were playing out the Britpop explosion with Parklife. We were in the studio and every day I would go in and write about something that had happened in the papers. So it’s a snapshot in time. Maybe at the time it was a little bit too arch in it’s observations because it was too close. But now with that distance it might be a good thing to stage as a period piece.
On what’s next for Damon Albarn
I’d like to do a record with my name on it, that’s the next one I want to make. I’m writing about an empty club. Empty club music. I’ve been trying to listen to the real coalface of popular music, which is made easier because my daughter (Missy, 11) is really into that. It’s quite homogenous. It has to be about a club. Either you’re getting ready to go to the club, queuing up, in the club or you’ve just let the club, to go to a better club. I thought that it would be good to make a pop record about a club nobody goes to.
With his opera Dr Dee returning for the 2012 Cultural Olympiad
I’m really looking forward to that. I think it’s opening the Cultural Olympiad. It’s another festival isn’t it? And I might do some sort of big gig next year.
When asked if this would be under his own name
Hmmmm….I don’t know. I might do something, as it’s an all kind of British year. I might as well go for it. I’ve got a few songs that might work.
Florence Welch
On the first single she bought My Name Is by Eminem
I got this from Woolworths when I was 10. The single had an age certificate on it but my Mum wasn’t too fussed. Before that she’d bought me (Spice Girls) Spiceworld for me. I use to listen to it whilst playing waitresses.
Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys)
On Q’s anniversary, “We’re the same age!”
On the first record he ever bought
I think it was a cassette single and if it wasn’t (PJ and Duncan’s) Let’s Get Ready To Rhumble it might be Edwyn Collins A Girl Like You. The new generation have got it easy now, haven’t they? You’ll ask some kid and because of downloading it will be Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures. I’d like to be able to say that, but it probably was Lets Get Ready To Rhumble. Actually, it might have been Zig And Zag…
On musical heroes he’s met
First time we played New York David Bowie came to watch us. We talked about nothing because we freaked out basically. We just all went silent and he could see what was happening and just went ‘Good gig. I’m off now”. That would be an example of how not to meet someone you admire.
Dizzee Rascal
On the album that got him laid, R-Kelly’s TP-2.com
This is baby making music. What’s the scenario? She comes back to the bedroom. You offer her a drink and some crisps. R Kelly comes on and, very shortly after the clothes come off. He’s definitely a nutter but R Kelly has got me laid more than a few times.
On what he’d like played at his funeral
I’d have (Nirvana) On A Plain played at my funeral: It’s kind of sad but it suggests floating off, like it’s not over.
Manic Street Preachers
On a classic album whose appeal eludes them
Nicky Wire: Arctic Monkeys. I never understood that. They’re the flattest, most linear thing ever. And it’s degenerated much like The Strokes into cataclysmic boredom.
James Dean Bradfield: Anything Brian Eno has to say or do these days I fucking detest with every atom of my being. He’s the Nick Clegg of the music world. He’s a bad motivational speaker. He’s an empty vessel who spouts bullshit and means nothing.
Mumford And Sons
On a genre of music that he’s never really understood
Marcus Mumford; Honestly? Dubstep. Most music you can realise objectively why people might like it, even if it’s the tele tubbies soundtrack or something but Dubstep? I don’t get it.
Tinie Tempah
On the best piece of advice ever given to hmm by another musician
Don’t get married. Lionel Richie told me that. He said ‘You know what? Just don’t get married T’ And Damon Albarn said ‘Never ever compromise. Do what you do, what you love. You’ll become a popular artist off the back of your creativity.

Q & FYFE DANGERFIELD ATTEMPT TO SET WORLD RECORD!

Q Magazine and acclaimed songwriter Fyfe Dangerfield will attempt to set a world record together on Tuesday, 5 July – for putting together the song with the most contributors and in the shortest space of time. The attempt will be made in aid of the charity War Child.
From 9am on Monday, 4 July, Q will ask its readers and listeners, musicians, celebrities and music fans across the world to begin submitting lyrical suggestions, sound samples, musical ideas and sound effects for a song titled ‘Superinjunction’ via Twitter, Facebook and other media.
At 2pm on 4 July, Guillemots frontman and multi-instrumentalist Fyfe Dangerfield – who has released three acclaimed albums with his band, the latest of which is this year’s Walk The River, and whose debut solo album Fly Yellow Moon was certified Gold in the UK – will begin the process of distilling all of the material submitted into a finished song.
Fyfe will have 24 hours to compile, arrange and record the finished song – using as many of the submitted ideas as humanly possible and collaborating with other artists when he can.
The finished version of ‘Superinjunction’ will be aired exclusively on Q Radio almost as soon as it is completed on Tuesday, 5 July and will be made available for download on iTunes (TBC) – with all proceeds going to War Child.
Q will appeal to its audience for design entries for the finished artwork for the download track – with Fyfe Dangerfield handpicking the winner.
Fyfe Dangerfield says: “Monday and Tuesday are going to involve a lot of coffee. Q just asked me about this last Thursday and I love things like this that come together really quickly. I can’t wait. It shouldn’t work, but it will.”
Q Editor In Chief Paul Rees says: “At Q we have long cherished the notion of allowing people to discover great music through all that we do – so the notion of having the Q audience actually become directly involved in its creation seems an entirely logical one.
“Obviously it would take a special sort of musician to rise to a challenge of this sort – and we had no doubt Fyfe Dangerfield would take it. We’re delighted that he did and equally so that we can benefit War Child’s outstanding work as a result.”
Ben Knowles of War Child says: “We’re delighted Q and Fyfe are coming together for this amazing project to help War Child – for a record-breaking 24 hours and supported by Q’s audience everywhere.
“War Child believes music can be a powerful force for good– both raising money and awareness for our work as a tool to directly help and change the lives of children in the world’s harshest war zones.”
You will be able to follow Q and Fyfe Dangerfield’s record breaking attempt at www.qthemusic.com, through Q’s Twitter feed @QMagazine and on Q Radio.
May Issue 2011 – Dave Grohl, Biffy Clyro, Josh Homme, Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha and…..Dappy From N’Dubz

This month’s Q Magazine (street date: 29th March) has ‘the nicest man in rock’ ™ Dave Grohl on the cover and features an umissable subscription offer.
For a year’s subscription to Q, readers can get an exclusive Foo Fighters cd ‘Medium Rare’. The 13-track cd collects together the bands cover versions including tracks by Wings, Pink Floyd, Prince and Gary Numan (full track listing below).
Grohl reveals that with the Nevermind producer at the helm for the Foos new album and having Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic play on it brought back the spectre of Kurt Cobain;
“Whenever I see Butch or Krist it’s always right above my head”, “When you bring all those people together, you could be having the best night if your lives but it’s there and it’s undeniable”.
He also reveals that he will be appearing in the next Muppet movie as a stand in for Animal when the errant puppet is sent to anger management classes;
“Yeah I don’t know if I’m supposed to talk about that but y’know there’s the four most famous drummers in music history – Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Keith Moon and Animal. So to be asked to be an Animal wannabe was a huge fucking career milestone”.
As well as world class front man/drummer Grohl is also a renowned cheese aficionado and he reveals to Q his favourite three varieties;
#1 Morbier ‘The King of cheeses, it’s a soft cheese with a line of ash through the middle. Gourmet!” #2 Cheddar “A nice simple one” #3 Stinking Bishop “It smells like a corpse and I’d imagine it tastes like one too. I put in the mini bar at my hotel. When I came back my room smelt like a morgue. It was disgusting. But I ate it”.
Elsewhere in the issue The Kills Jamie Hince reveals that he and band mate Alison Mosshart won’t be performing at his upcoming wedding to Kate Moss “We’re not really a wedding kind of band are we? We might dampen the mood a bit!”
Alex Turner reveals that the new Arctic Monkey’s album ‘Suck It And See’ had the working title of ‘Thriller’ and that it was recorded in the same Studio (Sound City in Los Angeles) where Nirvana made Nevermind and Fleetwood Mac crafted their masterpiece, Rumours.
This month’s “Cash For Questions” is the Queen Of The Stone Age’s ‘Ginger Elvis’ Josh Homme. Josh is photographed for the piece with his hand in a bandage, which then proceeds to bleed throughout the interview, he declines to be drawn on it saying “Sometimes rock n’roll mystery is good”, “I sustained an injury, is that vague enough for you? I can be more vague if you want”.
This month’s “Call Me” features Dappy from N’Dubz whom imparts such wisdom on topic of how they are going to break the US “We’re gonna be the new Black Eyed Peas, no disrespect to the old Black Eyed Peas but they’ve done their time” he also has been educating the US in street slang “They definitely didn’t get PENG” when asked what Peng actually means ‘”Fit. Hot. Sexy. Good locking. That’s Peng”.
Dappy also talks about his two kids “I can’t let them run riot so I’m making them know things and do like chores” when reminded that his eldest child is a one year old he recants slightly saying ”Well yeah not chores exactly. But showing them that you have to have respect”.
The final feature each month is ‘Last Requests’ and it’s Ke$ha’s turn to field the questions. When asked about the last time she had a weird dream “I dreamt that I was a pre-school kid making out with Lady Gaga” “We were in the art room at pre-school and we were painting together. Then I leaned over to give her a kiss. Next thing we’re making out”
She also reveals that for her current tour she’s spent $100,000 on glitter, she wants concert goers to “wake up three days later and still be finding little specks of glitter coming out of your vagina when you’re taking a bath”.
And finally she talks about the time she broke into Princes’ house “I was 19 and I drove over to his place in West Hollywood” “I couldn’t get the gate to open so I tried to slide my body under and got stuck. Eventually I made it through and found Prince rehearsing in his ballroom. He gave me this look of “WTF”. Security threw me out but I gave him a CD. I’m still waiting for that call”.

Q LIVE AT CONCRETE WITH MONA

Q LIVE AT CONCRETE WITH MONA
The New Year sees Q Magazine relocating their legendary intimate gigs to a brand new venue, Concrete in Shoreditch.
Concrete is a versatile underground space, found on the lower level of the Tea Building, the club’s interior is simple and raw, inspired by its industrial surroundings.
And what better way kick-start 2011 but with some kick ass rock and roll in the form of MONA on January 17th.
On of the BBC’s Sound Of 2011 tips, Nashville-based four-piece set the world alight with a storming calling card appearance on Later With Jools Holland and patronage from Radio 1’s Zane Lowe.
Their debut long player will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of next year. Don’t miss the chance to see them at what will probably be one of their last intimate gigs.
