STARS FLOCK TO CELEBRATE THE COSMOPOLITAN ULTIMATE WOMEN OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2011

3 November 2011, London
The UK’s hottest celebrities turned up in force as Fearne Cotton hosted the annual Cosmopolitan Ultimate Women of the Year Awards for the sixth year running last night. Sponsored by Boohoo.com, the star-studded event took place at Banqueting House and was attended by guests including Tulisa, Kelly Rowland, Amanda Holden and Olly Murs.
With three number one singles and a number one album under her belt, Jessie J was crowned ‘Ultimate UK Music Star’. Kelly Rowland scooped the award for ‘Ultimate TV Personality’. Kelly has enjoyed phenomenal success as a new judge on The X Factor, becoming one of the country’s most talked about personalities. She has offered real compassion for all the contestants, as well as showcasing her undisputable experience and knowledge of the music industry. Fashion favourite Daisy Lowe, took home the ‘Ultimate Style Queen’ Award, whilst ’Ultimate TV Actress’ gong went to Lauren Socha of Misfits fame. The ‘Ultimate Newcomer’ Award was presented to Michelle Dockery, famed for her role in Downton Abbey.
Also picking up awards on the night were Amanda Holden who won ‘Ultimate Theatre Star’ following her recent stint in Shrek: The Musical. Caitlin Moran was honoured with the ‘Ultimate Writer’ Award, and heartthrob favourites JLS scooped the ‘Ultimate Men of the Year’ Award.
The ‘Ultimate Icon’ Award went to female punk rock legend Debbie Harry, as a credit to her outstanding contributions to the music industry over the years – the award was presented by pop icon Kylie Minogue.
The awards also celebrated the remarkable stories and achievements of the nation’s real life women, including Lisa and Louise Hawker who won the coveted ‘Ultimate Editor’s Choice’ Award. After their sister Lindsay Hawker was murdered in Japan in 2007, Lisa and Louise flew to Japan to help raise awareness of the police hunt, focusing their efforts on bringing justice to their sister. The ‘Ultimate Campaigner’ Award went to Kristin Hallenga, the inspirational young woman behind the charity Coppafeel! Fighting her own personal battle with Cancer, Kristin set up the charity to encourage other young women to take their own precautions to arm against breast cancer.
Also collecting an award on the night was Gemma Dowler, for ‘Ultimate Family Girl’. Gemma has been the glue that has held her family together since her sister Millie’s death. Helping her family through the widely publicised trial, she saw Levi Bellfield charged and jailed for Milly’s killing in 2010. With Gemma’s unwavering support the family have since made an effort to move on with their lives.
Gemma says of her award: “Firstly I would like to thank Cosmo and the team for nominating me for this award. Although, so far, this has been the worse year of my life, Cosmo have given me something to look forward to. I can now begin to rebuild my life as a 25-year-old woman, and draw a line under the traumatic past years I have had. This award marks the beginning of what I feel like is a new start for me.
My friends and family have been fantastic – a real rock for me through all of the ups and downs! Hopefully now I can slowly begin to remember some of the good times that I had with my beautiful sister Milly and those memories will give me strength to carry on and enjoy my life”
The real-life winners were selected by a panel of high profile judges – Cosmopolitan editor Louise Court, Cosmopolitan’s agony aunt Irma Kurtz, Karren Brady, Myleene Klass, Reggie Yates and Jessica Ennis, and of course host Fearne Cotton.
Cosmopolitan’s Editor, Louise Court commented, “It always amazes me to hear the stories of these extraordinary individuals – we receive so many remarkable nominations for the real life awards, and this year we really feel that the lives and stories of our winners are exceptional.”

JESSIE J’s THE ONE WHO’S LAUGHING NOW UK STAR DOMINATES AT THE 16th MOBO AWARDS IN ASSOCIATION WITH LEBARA MOBILE

Tinie Tempah, Adele, Dappy and Tinchy Stryder Also Celebrate Wins
Dionne Bromfield Gives Moving Amy Winehouse Tribute
Tinie Tempah, Adele, Dappy and Tinchy Stryder were amongst those honoured with a prestigious MOBO Award last night, whilst Jessie J walked away with a staggering four gongs.
With pop prince Jason Derulo and the nation’s sweetheart Alesha Dixon as the evening’s dynamic hosts, the 16th MOBO Awards in association with Lebara Mobile at the SECC in Glasgow, was televised live on BBC3 with repeated highlights on BBC1.
Jessie J had a markedly triumphant evening, firstly due to her daredevil stage performance (without a leg cast for one of her first performances since her accident back in June) followed by a sweep of winning 4 of her 5 nominated categories for Best UK Act, Best Album, Best Newcomer and Best Song. Tinie Tempah was the debonair man of the hour, fighting off fierce competition for the Best Hip Hop/Grime category, while Adele also came up trumps winning Best R&B/ Soul Act and Rihanna pipped the likes of Beyoncé and Bruno Mars to the post by grabbing the Best International Act Award. All winners were voted for by fans via mobo.com and respective media partner outlets.
The Awards Show itself, the second time the MOBO Awards have come to the vibrant Scottish city of Glasgow, was met by fever-pitched excitement and once again raised the bar with stunning production effects and milestone performances. Power duets were the order of the evening with Professor Green and Emeli Sandé performing together as did Dubstep/Grime girls Katy B and Ms Dynamite. To cap it all, Dappy and Tinchy Stryder wowed the audience with their elaborate stage performance of hit single ‘Spaceship’, for which they picked up the Best Video award.
London rapper Wretch 32, gorgeous Glaswegian Yasmin, co-host Jason Derulo and US teen sensation Alexis Jordan also gave equally electrifying performances. Joining the top-level talent performing on the night was Dionne Bromfield, the Goddaughter of the late Amy Winehouse, who belted out a thoroughly moving rendition of Amy’s ‘Love Is A Losing Game’, in a fitting tribute including a video montage of the late MOBO Award winning singer.
Seminal R&B group Boyz II Men took to the stage to pick up the well-deserved Outstanding Contribution to Music Award and then went on to bring the house down with a medley of hits from their multi-platinum selling albums. The award was presented by JLS, who flew in to Glasgow by private jet especially to present to Boyz II Men, who they cite as musical inspirations. Making a strong comeback, Jessie J delivered a fierce performance, with the theme being shedding her former self.
Guest presenters on the night included Chipmunk, Olympic medallist Philipps Idowu, Fazer of N-Dubz and ex-Sugababe Keisha Buchanan.
The BeMOBO Award, is one that honours the hard work and special contribution made by an individual or organisation that orchestrates significant changes via grass roots, educational or community initiatives. This year saw Youth Music, a charity initiative encouraging development through music win the coveted award, with celebrity ambassador Myleene Klass on hand to present the award on the night, and was accepted by thrice MOBO Nominated duo Rizzle Kicks, who themselves went through the Youth Music programme.
Kanya King, CEO and Founder of MOBO: “The excitement and atmosphere of our second year here in Glasgow has shown the love that the whole country has for MOBO. We felt so welcome the first time we came here, we didn’t think it could be topped. This year has been a phenomenal success and we can’t wait to return in 2013. It’s been a great event that has welcomed some exciting new award winners to the MOBO roll of honour including the global superstar Adele, the UK’s hot talent Tinchy Stryder and of course the fantastic Jessie J walking away with four awards.”
Russell Atkinson, Managing Director Lebara Mobile: “Congratulations to all the winners and nominees this evening. It has been an exceptional evening showcasing outstanding talent and we are extremely proud to sponsor this exciting event. A special congratulations to Jessie J for winning an amazing four awards including the Best Newcomer Act in association with Lebara Mobile.”

Spirit of London Awards Nominees Attend Downing Street Reception

Prime Minister David Cameron meets Community Heroes, plus music, sports and business supporters, ahead of Royal Albert Hall event
London, 19th September 2011: Community heroes from across the UK were honoured with a reception at Downing Street this afternoon, as part of the third Spirit of London Awards, the year-round outreach and legacy project created by the Damilola Taylor Trust. In addition to the Awards nominees, many of this year’s Awards show’s stellar line-up of musical artists and celebrity supporters attended, joining the Prime Minister in celebrating and congratulating the true face of Britain’s youth.
The Prime Minister’s guests included the shortlist of nominees for this year’s Awards show, with previous winners (SOLA Ambassadors); the musical artists appearing at the Royal Albert Hall on October 10th, including Tinchy Stryder, Dionne Bromfield, Diversity and host Stacey Solomon; SOLA supporters Rio Ferdinand, Jermain Defoe, and Olympians Christine Ohuruogu and Tasha Danvers, plus the young Spirit of London Awards Foundation members who have created both the unique Awards Show and outreach programmes.
Not only against the backdrop of recent social unrest, but through the whole year, SOLA nominees have all continued to display passionate resolve to counter the negative perception of Britain’s urban youth through positive action. Whether through music, sport, education, entrepreneurship, art or social enterprise, the nominees have persisted in sharing their time and skills, building strong communities and in helping disadvantaged people overcome the challenges they face.
Nominations for the 11 awards have been made by their peers across London and the UK, to celebrate the incredible and inspirational achievements of young people in Britain today. The winners of the 11 available categories will be decided by a diverse judging panel from the world of music, campaigning, sport and community. A special “London Legend Award” which honours someone who embodies the true spirit of London, will also be presented on the evening. Previous winners have included Sir Michael Caine (2009) and Barbara Windsor (2010).
The Spirit of London Awards 2011 will be held in the Royal Albert Hall on October 10th, having been awarded the Hall’s single annual free let.
Rt Hon David Cameron MP said:
“In the Spirit of London Awards we celebrate the best of the capital’s young people. When I go round the country I meet young people more hopeful, more energetic, more fired up to change their neighbourhood and change the world than any in my generation. Spirit of London is a fantastic example of that. It is a powerful antidote to what we saw in the summer, demonstrating to the whole country that there are young people doing great things that we can all be proud of. I want to thank the young people who organise the awards and all the nominees for the fantastic things they’re doing.”
Rio Ferdinand, a strong supporter of the Spirit of London Awards, and the Damilola Taylor Trust said:
“Damilola’s legacy is now enshrined in the awards as we honour the kind of young person he was turning into. These awards recognise young people who are the true face of London’s youth. I am proud to be associated with them”
Jasper Hope, Chief Operating Officer of the Royal Albert Hall, said
‘Dozens of applications are received each year from a diverse range of excellent charities but the Spirit of London Awards stood out on this occasion as a shining example of an event which would lend itself spectacularly well not only to being held on the world’s most famous stage but also as one which matches our own desire to deliver inspiration and support the pursuit of excellence, particularly by young people’.
Tinchy Stryder, headlining the Awards’ music acts, said
“It is great to see young people getting such high profile recognition for doing good work in their local communities and I am looking forward to sharing the stage with them at the Royal Albert Hall.”

Arctic Monkeys and Jessie J have also bagged multiple nominations.

JESSIE J JUMPS AHEAD AT THIS YEAR’S NOMINATIONS
WRETCH 32, ADELE AND TINIE TEMPAH ALSO LEAD THE WAY AT THE MOBO AWARDS NOMINATIONS HELD AT THE LUXURIOUS ST PANCRAS RENAISSANCE HOTEL, LONDON
FANS CAN VOTE ON MOBO.COM AND VIA FACEBOOK
Jessie J, Wretch 32, Adele and Tinie Tempah set the tone, with the most nominations at the prestigious 2011 MOBO Awards in association with Lebara Mobile. For the first time ever, this year sees brand new talent featuring in every UK nomination category, proving the sheer dominance of a new wave of musicians.
Now in its 16th year, the MOBO Awards have come into their own, having fully established themselves as the leader in its field, with a nod from MOBO being a pinnacle achievement for many artists. Following its triumphant 2009 Scottish debut, this autumn will see the MOBO Awards return to Glasgow on 5th October 2011 for an even bigger star studded ceremony.
The 2011 nominations welcome a burst of fresh new talent, who’ve made waves in the UK industry. Emeli Sandé, Ed Sheeran and Mike Hough include some of the recently signed and unsigned stars-in-the-making to receive a nomination, which are advised by The MOBO Awards’ independent music panel of top DJs, music editors, journalists, broadcasters and other key tastemakers in today’s music scene.
Having sprung from virtual obscurity over the past 12 months, Essex powerhouse Jessie J leads with an unprecedented 5 nominations for Best Newcomer, Best UK Act, Best Album, Best Video and Best Song for her stomping number 1 single “Do It Like a Dude”. Shocked at her staggering 5 nominations, Jessie says:
“I am so honoured to be nominated. I have watched so many of the artists I look up to being nominated, winning awards and performing – its amazing to be in the company of such amazing talent. I can’t wait to be there on the 5th. Thank you to the MOBO Awards and my fans for making this possible.”
Other UK ladies follow suit, proving the impressive surge of female talent including the unstoppable Adele, who’s up for 4 nominations, as well as acclaimed newcomers Katy B, Emeli Sandé and Yasmin.
Having already topped the single and album charts in recent months, North Londoner Wretch 32 joins Tinie Tempah as this year’s top male nominees, each gaining an impressive 4 nominations. Bursting with elation at being nominated for Best Newcomer, Best UK Act, Best UK Hip Hop/Grime and Best Song for ‘Traktor’, Wretch enthuses:
“I grew up watching the MOBO Awards, so to be nominated for even just one award feels overwhelming. I was going to attend the Awards anyway but now I’ll be at a table ahhh yeah lol!”
Chase & Status and new kids on the block Rizzle Kicks follow closely behind in the MOBO honour roll, with the dynamic duos both receiving a surprising hattrick of nominations each. Speaking of their first ever-national award nominations, the Brighton based teens said:
“We are completely ecstatic to be nominated for Best Newcomer at the MOBO Awards. A year ago we were unsigned and watched the awards on tele. We can’t wait to go to Glasgow!”
Global superstars including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Nicki Minaj are all in the running for 2011’s Best International Act. Dancefloor king Jason Derulo – who has just been announced to co-host the awards – is also vying for the coveted title.
The MOBO Awards are one of the few awards shows whereby all categories are voted for by the public. MOBO recognize the increasing importance of Social Media in the music industry and to artists and have welcomed social media into the 2011 ceremony with the Best Newcomer award in association with Lebara Mobile, being voted for solely via Facebook. All other categories can be voted for at www.mobo.com.
Kanya King, CEO and Founder of MOBO: “We are very pleased with the level of this year’s nominees, including many emerging artists, some who have come from backgrounds where they haven’t been given a foot in the door, so-to-speak. These artists have shown real determination to make it happen. We applaud that today. It’s great to be providing these artists in particular with a platform and they help to keep our event new, fresh and relevant – it will be a massive show at Glasgow’s SECC on 5th October. Now, let’s get the votes in.”

15th MOBO ANNIVERSARY PROVES UK TALENT HAS COME OF AGE

The cream of UK talent swept the board at this year’s MOBO Awards in association with Lebara Mobile, held last night inside the boiling Echo Arena (Liverpool). With all categories voted for by the public on mobo.com, the star-studded ceremony saw homegrown talent Tinie Tempah and JLS as this year’s biggest winning acts, walking away with two gongs each.
The past 15 years of MOBO Awards have celebrated and embodied urban music and in a year where MOBO artists have accounted for two thirds of the No.1 spots in the single charts, this year’s ceremony has proved that British is best.
This year’s awards marked the explosion of the UK’s very own Tinie Tempah. Making his MOBO debut with a staggering four nominations, the South London rapper took home the prestigious Best Newcomer award and Best Video in association with MTV BASE for his number 1 smash Frisky.
The UK’s favourite boyband, and last year’s winners JLS scooped Best UK Act in association with Lebara Mobile and the Best Album award, with the boys also stealing the show with their surprise collaboration of the evening with US star Travie McCoy.
Hosted by Radio 1’s Reggie Yates and UK songstress Alesha Dixon with N-Dubz hosting backstage in Liverpool, this year’s show saw other phenomenal performances from the crème de la crème of the UK’s finest musical talent from N Dubz, Roll Deep, Mark Ronson and Tinchy Stryder’s show stopping finale featuring Tinie Tempah, Devlin and Giggs.
Along with his stellar performance on the night, Professor Green proved his worth this year picking up Best UK Hip Hop / Grime, while Best UK R&B / Soul Act went to Plan B.
This year MOBO also paid tribute awarding the Lifetime Achievement Award to Billy Ocean for over 30 years in the business.
For only the second time in MOBO history, the show ventured outside of its native London, to expand the MOBO family to another city with a great musical heritage, to the banks of the Mersey, home of The Beatles, Liverpool.
With Liverpool bursting with some great TV, music and football talent, the Echo Arena has proved to be more than welcoming to the up and coming stars of the future at this year’s MOBO Awards.

Mobo awards crown Tinie Tempah as best newcomer

In sequins and satin, sharp suits and high heels Liverpool helped the Mobo Awards celebrate its 15th anniversary in style.
London grime MC and rapper Tinie Tempah showed himself to be a worthy successor to the current king of UK urban Dizzee Rascal as he was named best newcomer, after a year that has seen him move seamlessly from the grittier edges of the underground scene to the mainstream.
The 21-year-old, whose real name is Patrick Okogwu, also took home the award for best video for Frisky featuring Labrinth, although he missed out on best song and best UK act.
Accepting the award, Tempah said he had been at the event last year as a spectator. “It’s nice to be nominated and its nice to finally win something,” he mumbled into the mic.
At the Echo Arena, Strictly Come Dancing’s Alesha Dixon hosted the music of black origin awards alongside Radio 1 chart show presenter Reggie Yates.
Boyband JLS took home two awards for best UK act and best album.
Best song went to N-Dubz’s Playing with Fire featuring Mr Hudson while best UK hip hop/grime act went to Hackney-born Professor Green, aka Stephen Paul Manderson.
East London continued to punch above its weight as Forest Gate’s Ben Drew, better-known as Plan B, was awarded best Best UK R&B/Soul Act after seeing his critically lauded second album The Defamation of Strickland Banks go straight into the UK album chart at number one earlier this year.
Best international artist went to Eminem, whose seventh studio album Recovery stayed at number one on the US chart for five consecutive weeks, also achieving the top spot in the UK.
Before the awards, ticket holders streamed up to the gates of the Echo Arena. Michelle Dalrymple, a local government worker from the city was there with her eight-strong clan. “We’re black, we’re Scouse and we’re proud,” she said in glittering golden heels. “Liverpool has a brilliant up-and-coming music scene and this is a boost to urban music in the city.”
